OE Marathon Team
The OE Marathon Team was started in 1999. Expectations
were uncertain as we gathered local runners to train for The
LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon while raising money for the clients
of Opportunity Enterprises.
The first year 75 runners
took to the street and raised $37,000. It was then that the team
took form and grew into a magnificent fundraising program. Now,
the OE Marathon Team is one of eight charity participants
for The Bank of America Chicago Marathon with more than 400
members. In 2007, our runners helped us to raise over $200,000,
which in turn
allows us to continue the amazing programs offered within our
agency. |

Popcorn
Panic Team
In response to numerous requests, in 2000, we started our Rookie Runners program.
Many of our marathoners had family or friends who wanted to get involved
but were not sure where to start. We created a novice program to
help runners start with little or no running background to train for
and complete the five-mile Popcorn Panic held locally each September
in conjunction with the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival.
Today this program
is known as the Popcorn Panic Team.We
have trained over 400 individuals and many have gone on to complete
the marathon as a result. After
a few years with the Rookies, we had individuals ask if we would
add a walking component. They were interested in raising money
for OE and getting involved, but for various reasons could not
run. The inaugural team consisted of 15 people and they all completed
the walking portion of the Popcorn Panic that is 3.1 miles. In
addition, a number of our clients were able to get involved and
add a fitness component to their life.
To date, over 1500 runners
have participated in our fitness programs. In keeping with the
mission of OE, we will continue to help individuals work harder
than they ever imagined possible - to cross the finish line that
once seemed unreachable.
